Icons of Finnish Glass Art
6.5.–27.8.
After World War II, the glass industry came to a turning point. The decrease in international trade, imports of raw materials and product exports halted mass production, and the focus shifted to creating exclusive, unique pieces. A new collaboration between artists, designers and glassmakers came to influence the way we saw glassware. Traditional designs gave way to artists’ newer creations, which were mostly handcrafted. The icons of Finnish glass art were born.
The artists and designers that created the foundation for the success of Finnish glass art included Alvar Aalto, Gunnel Nyman, Kaj Franck, Tapio Wirkkala, Timo Sarpaneva, Helena Tynell and Nanny Still, but the expert glass-blowers in the factories played a crucial role in the creation of the icons of glass art.
